Gothenburg ’83 – the fans’ stories book
In 1983 Aberdeen, managed by Sir Alex Ferguson, beat the world’s most famous, and successful football team Real Madrid in the final of The European Cup Winners’ Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Through the social media pages of my side project The Dandy Dons, I collected stories from supporters who were at the game in Sweden or experienced the event back in Aberdeen. Over 60 supporters contributed. The book is 112 pages in A4.
To compile, design and illustrate the book was a labour of love for me, together with an opportunity to develop my design and illustration skills.
The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine artwork by Heinz Edelmann inspired me for the illustrations. The sense of joy and fun that comes with both the artwork and the music. While the book is very niche, the stories are very readable, just football supporters enjoying themselves under extraordinary circumstances.
